The province of Balikesir is a fascinating place in Turkey, near the metropolitan area of Istanbul and yet also with plenty of beachfront and water property along both the Aegean and Marmara coasts. It is a great place for those international property investors who want to be nearer to the largest city in the country and yet still have all the advantages of being bear the water.

The closest properties within Balikersir province to Istanbul are those along the Sea of Marmara. The resort town of Erdek is a popular place for weekend visitors from Istanbul and those who want more of an international flair in their overseas property. From here you can catch ferry boats to nearby islands and enjoy the summer weather. Just to the east of Erdek is the town of Bandirma, where you can catch a high speed catamaran to Istanbul. Not far is Manyas National Park, a popular place for birdwatchers.

The Gulf of Edremit lies on the Aegean coast and has numerous resorts and beaches. The towns of Ayvalik, Edremit, Altinoluk and Oren all lie on the water and have plenty of resorts and properties in which to invest. The lush green forests that dot this part of Turkey are in abundance along the coast here and there is plenty for the outdoor lover to do.

The capital city of the province is Balikesir, a pretty little city that holds lots of history and cultural attractions. It has a number of existing properties that you can purchase, though, not being a resort town, doesn’t have the off-plan choices that other seaside resorts have.

Balikesir is an ideal place from which to see historic sites, including the location of ancient Troy and more modern ones such as Gallipoli, an easy ferry ride across the Dardanelles from Canakkale. The distance from Istanbul to the town of Balikesir is approximately 170 kilometers, or 110 miles. From Istanbul to Bandirma is 110 kilometers or 70 miles. For the Aegean coast of Balikesir, the nearest airport is Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, about 80 kilometers south of Ayvalik.
